Self-Care Isn’t Selfish: An Auntie’s Guide

September 16, 2026  •  Barbara Howard — Thee Auntie  •  3 min read

As aunties, we spend so much time pouring into everyone else that we forget to save a little for ourselves. We show up for the birthdays, the emergencies, the “I just need someone to talk to” calls. But when was the last time you showed up for yourself?

Here’s the truth: self-care isn’t selfish. It’s the oxygen mask principle — you have to secure your own mask before you can help anyone else. And if you’re running on empty, you can’t pour from a cup that’s dry.

Redefining What Self-Care Actually Means

Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and face masks (though those are nice). It’s the unglamorous stuff too — going to the doctor, setting boundaries, saying no when you’re stretched too thin, getting enough sleep, drinking your water. It’s anything that keeps you whole.

The Auntie’s Self-Care Checklist

1. Protect Your Peace
If certain conversations, obligations, or relationships drain you, it’s okay to step back. You don’t have to be everything to everyone.

2. Keep Your Own Identity
You’re an auntie, but you’re also a woman with your own dreams, hobbies, and interests. Don’t lose yourself in the role. Keep reading, keep traveling, keep creating.

3. Rest Without Guilt
The to-do list will always be there. Rest is not a reward you earn — it’s a requirement. Take the nap. Take the day off. Take the vacation.

4. Move Your Body
Not to punish it, but to thank it. Walk, dance, stretch, swim. Your body has carried you through every chapter — treat it like the treasure it is.

5. Feed Your Mind
Read the book. Listen to the podcast. Take the class. Curiosity keeps you young, and wisdom grows when you’re still learning.

The Permission You’ve Been Waiting For

If no one has told you lately: you are allowed to take up space. You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to prioritize yourself without explaining why. Being the auntie who shows up for everyone doesn’t mean disappearing yourself.

Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s the most generous thing you can do — because a whole, rested, joyful auntie is the best gift you can give the people you love.
